Everything you need to know about ISO/IEC 20000-1:2018
ISO/IEC 20000-1:2018 specifies requirements for a Service Management System (SMS) — the framework for planning, establishing, delivering, operating, and improving IT services. It aligns with ITIL and other IT service management frameworks, covering service level management, incident management, problem management, change management, release management, configuration management, capacity management, availability management, and supplier management. Certification adds third-party verification to practices that may already be well-developed.
ISO/IEC 20000-1 applies to IT service providers of any size — internal IT departments, managed service providers (MSPs), cloud service providers, outsourcing organisations, and systems integrators. Certification is particularly valuable in competitive markets and is referenced in many IT outsourcing contracts, managed service agreements, and public sector IT procurement frameworks as evidence of service management maturity.
The Stage 2 audit assesses service delivery against service level targets, incident and service request management, root cause management through problem management, controlled change and release processes, configuration management records, and supplier performance management. Interviews with service desk staff, IT operations teams, and management are central. View the full certification process.
ISO/IEC 20000-1:2018 certificates are valid for three years. Surveillance audits assess service portfolio changes, performance against service level targets, and the effectiveness of the continual improvement programme. Organisations that actively use their SMS to drive measurable service improvements get sustained operational and commercial value from their certification.
